Episode 22

I do not know what to say of this episode except it is a waste of time, at least half of it. I think I will write the recap in 2 parts.

Let's just get over the waste of time part.

Who?

Who else...BUT that Gor Gor and Mui Mui story arc.

Sum felt Dr Ling was evasive and quiet and sullen and she tried to contact him but she couldn't get him. She was very worried and I don't know how, she somehow found his blog and his entry about his father an ice cream seller.

Pause here.

How come an ice cream seller can send the son to I think England or somewhere to study medicine? Isn't medicine supposed to be very expensive? He didn't look like he had scholarship or loan!

Anyway she read his moving tribute to his dad.

But he was still missingand by the time she don't know how ended up in a place and he had her arms around her, she was in love with Dr Ling. GOODBYE HOU, HELLO GOR GOR. What is this series' obsession with che-tai love eh? Even if not real but the idea of you calling your BF Gor Gor and he calls you Mui Mui is like some seriously crazy role playing game.

Anyway they sat down and he explained why he disappeared and I was thinking why don't you just disappear for good?

She mentioned to him she read his blod entry on his father and was very moved by it but Dr Ling said "Actually I wasn't always a good son. He worked hard to send me to med school but I didn't appreciate his effort. Instead of studying, I gambled. I was terrible. Father never knew. One day he sent a neighbour's daughter whom I know to visit me. She was 4 years older but she was very supportive of me. When she found out what I was doing there, she didn't scold me but instead cleaned up my room and encouraged me. My father then fell very sick but he told me not to come home to visit, to save money and to study hard. He died not long after. But all the money he sent I used up for gambling. I didn't have any left. But instead of abandoning me, she took up a job illegally and I too took up part time job and because of her I finished med school. A few days ago she called me suddenly to tell me her grandma (I think her mom or grandma, not sure) was very sick. I rushed to visit which was why I was missing for a few days. I discovered grandma wasn't that sick at all. Maybe she felt something wasn't right with me, maybe she wanted to test me if I still cared..."

Sum was very quiet, close to tears and said "She is your obligation and you must not forsake this obligation" and Dr Ling sadly said "And I won't forsake my obligation".

And so before the romance started, it was doomed.

Pause here.

ALL OF A SUDDEN a girlfriend? And why emphasise on the fact she was 4 years older? What she is a hag now? Come on! Anyway he owed her. And may I saw Bosco looked positively early 90s with that flashback scene, his big hair, bejewelled jacket and all. Ewwww....

And I got a question I did not ask before. If they're same age, presumably same time graduate, how come Dr Ling has welcomed so many babies and seems to experience and all and Sum like a student doctor? As this scene explain, Dr Ling is not like some genius so how come ah?

Ok, be done with this boring part. Nowadays I see Linda Chung I knew it would be Bosco and I would just yawn. Linda is still good even if when she delivered her lines whilst crying, her mouth seems rather strange and over the top. I hate what they're doing with her. And I simply do not feel anything for Bosco's character.

Next up the more interesting bit.

Yuet and Ka were walking back home when they saw Auntie Sa getting off a taxi with a youngish man (played by Louis Yuen) whom was introduced was Yan Chi. Ka and Yuet didn't see his face at first and assumed it was tomboy Ka Mei. THey were relieved to know it wasn't Ka Mei. Then an old lady came out of the car and they were shocked but then relieved it wasn't her either. Suddenly a pretty girl with long hair speaking on the phone stepped out of the taxi and Ka was immediately attracted to her much to the annoyance of Yuet and KA said "Where is cousin Ka Mei?" and Auntie Sa proudly said "That's her!" pointing to that girl and both were shocked she was so pretty!

Back at home Ka Mei has a room to herself and she was introduced around, everybody was very surprised the tomboy was so pretty and then Yan Chi was introduced as well but strangely KA Mei looked annoyed.

Inside the room Ka Mei scolded Auntie Sa who was so shaken didn't say anything back. KA Mei Said "Come on mother, have a bit of class like Auntie Hor Ma and everybody else! How can you act like you did? You just embarass me! And why you even introduced that man and then talked so much that I can't even ask my cousins how they are?" and Auntie Sa said meekly "He is going to be your stepfather" and Ka Mei said "He is not my father! I am so ashamed of you!".

Yuet overheard, told everyone who was happy that for once someone could shut Auntie Sa up and grandpa was so shocked "But she is at least 10 years older than that Yan Chi!" but Ka happily said "YES!! I thought he was with cousin Ka Mei! Woo hoo! Lucky for me she is not!!".

Ka Mei settled down quickly and began to mingle warmly with everyone. When she knew Ka was having a function for some exercise company, she was there and begged Ka for a spot in the promo. Yuet refused but Ka seduced allowed her and good thing she danced very well and quickly stole the spotlight. During celebrations Yuet was strangely annoyed, drank a lot and ended up vomitting by the roadside with Ka Mei and Ka together.

Meanwhile Auntie Sa met with Yan Chi and his mother. They were alone and so Auntie Sa talked with Yan Chi about postponing the wedding as Ka Mei didn't like him. Yan Chi angry said "You asked me to wait to marry you. I waited. Then you promised me a general manager position in Ka Hou Yuet Yuen but it turns out to be that smaller one! You always make promises you never fulfill, I am fed up!"

Bad editing scene as it just jumped a karaoke joint and Auntie Sa acting like some giddy high school girl dedicated a song to Yan Chi and Yan Chi tearfully dedicated one song back and so they're still in love as ever.

Cho Ba went for dinner at Hor Ma and KA Mei was cooking Portugese food. He had good news that on Mooncake festival day the children will all gather with Hor Ma's side AND grandma will be coming. Everyone was overjoyed and then someone asked "Would Hung mind?" and Cho Ba said "Why would she?". Ka Mei appeared and Cho Ba was also shocked she was so pretty. Cho Ba then began to cough a little and Ka Mei immediately offered to buy him some portugese medicine and Cho Ba or someone asked Ka to accompany her.

Next scene she was down with Ka and walking to a shop as they chatted warmly. Ka Mei sounds like a nice girl but very ambitious as she asked "How come Hou calls me Tomboy?" and Ka explained she looked like in those facebook pictures and Ka Mei laughed and said "I was at the lowest point of my life there. I did look terrible. My parents are both useless with one hiding a love in the bushes". Ka interrupted and asked "Isn't it in the cupboard?" and she replied "My father's one in the cupboard, my mother's one in the bushes".

Pause here!

So that dance instructor loverboy of Auntie Sa is Yan Chi!! For once some continuity.

Ka Mei said "I have missed out so much because of these 2. I am determined to find my way in this world. I have a degree that has no meaning in this country but I have youth and beauty on my side, I am sure I can achieve success!" and Ka agreed.

Back at home Auntie Sa pulled grandpa to the sofa and said "Everyone I have 2 announcements. First, I have found a new love and I will be marrying him. He is Yan Chi!" and grandpa said "I would have objected to the relationship because he is so much younger than you but if this is what you want, I am ok with it" and Hor Ma said "Sa, if he makes you happy then I am happy for you". Auntie Sa happy then said "Secondly, from tomorrow onwards, Yan Chi will be the new manager of the Ka Hou Yuet Yuen shop!" and Hou looked at Hor Ma who looked at Sa shocked by that. Then Sa said "Well father agrees!" and grandpa said "Well, he is unemployed and I can't let my daughter's future husband be an unemployed bum" but Hor Ma said "But we have enough of people father, remember?" and Auntie Sa said "Well fire *** then. She is always yawning anyway, not really working" and Hor Ma gently said "Sa, if I remember correctly he worked at a dance studio as some clerk right? Ka knows a lot of people. I will ask him to find a suitable job for Yan Chi" but Auntie Sa blew up and said "I own the shop too! Can't I have someone to work there? Ok, fine! Hou, you don't need to work at the shop anymore! There! Yan Chi can now go! Father how can you be so unfair to my husband when you could be fair to all of them?!" and Cho Ba fed up said "LISTEN! I will handle it! I will find him a job ok?" but Auntie Sa stood up and wasn't satisfied. She shouted at Yuet "You Lor Lui, what are you sniggering at?" which took Yuet by surprise since she wasn't doing anything. Auntie Sa shrieked "I have to think of Ka Mei. He is going to be his stepfather, he has always been good to her and she is fond of him! I can't let him not have a good job. What would Ka Mei think? What about my Ka Mei's opinion? Doesn't she matter?!"

and suddenly Ka's voice boomed out "So Auntie Sa, did you enlarge your breast in Portugal for Ka Mei too?"

and everyone was so shocked by what they heard and Auntie Sa covered her breasts in shock whilst Ka Mei looked on ashamed at her mother's attitude.

Next episode, Ka Mei's wants a job and battles her eyelids at Ka who could not resist her charm and gave her high salary much to Yuet's annoyance.

Ka Mei looks like an upright nice person at first when she scolded Auntie Sa for embarassing her but I would think she is exactly like Auntie Sa with her MEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEME attitude. She is very ambitious and a go getter. I believe however nice a person if that person is overly too ambitious too fast, their souls can be sold for a price. So lookout for Ka Mei to be a villain. WHy she immediately attaches herself to Ka I am not sure, maybe she thought being an eldest son he will inherit Cho Ba's business?

Anyway performance wise, what more can I say? From competent to really good. But the idea of Louis Yuen and Susanna Kwan just doesn't click. No chemistry and just plain weird.

And Kate Tsui herself is weird. She just have this face and crazy eyes that seems so suitable for crazy people role. But I must admit, she has a killer body and she looks like she can dance competently. But I am not so sure about her character Ka Mei, whether she is genuinely a good person or not.

As for everybody else, I really have no comment. Probably because I am writing this in a rush. A busy day today.

Favourite scene/quote? Well thanks to Ka again..

So Auntie Sa, did you enlarge your breast in Portugal for Ka Mei too?

- Ka to Auntie Sa

Seeing that the actress who plays this girlfriend is Claire Yiu, she's certainly not a hag, lol.

I guess the 4 years was emphasised because it's not in the norm and it's not a relationship that people look upon favourably. In a relationship (especially chinese), it's a big deal to have the woman older than the man, even by 1 year. It's plain ridiculous imo. The man older than the woman by 10 years is ok, but, the woman older than the man by 1 year is a big deal. WTH?!

Haha, funny Ka thinking Yan Chi is with Ka Mei.

" I have a degree that has no meaning in this country"

So, degree from Portugal's universities are not recognised in HK. I only know today. :D

Btw, the story of Sum-Dr.Ling-Win Lam was supposedly copied from a radio drama.

I agree with you. Moreover Yan Chi is 10 years younger, no one seems to make a big issue out of it. I just feel that emphasis was supposed to garner our sympathy, that he is meant to be with Sum who knows and is of his same wave length but girlfriend is not. I felt that was just excuses. Check out Episode 23, worse to come.

I think I may have translated wrongly what Ka Mei said. She didn't say " I have a degree that has no meaning in this country"
but rather the degree can't be use in HK. I suppose they're the same thing just that my translation is more poetic.

I did heard the love story is from some play or something. I will check out that link. But anyway radio play or not, it still suck.

Linda was trying to cry differently for this role, which is why it's not the same "beautiful tears" that she's famous for. I think she tried too hard with the mouth, snot coming out, etc... but when 99% of your scenes are crying, there's not much you can do. :\

I kind of cringed with the excessive crying. Mostly I just felt bad because it was unnecessary. *Sigh*
